How to Choose A Quarterhorse - from EHow

Characteristics of the Quarter Horse Breed [ARCHIVE] and Colors of a Quarter horse - scroll half way down the page for the description and chart. 13 registrable colors of American Quarter Horses; - the AQHA offers this color chart showing these including the most prominent color of sorrel (reddish brown). The others are bay, black, brown, buckskin, chestnut, dun, red dun, gray, grullo, palomino, red roan and blue roan. It's interesting to note that the official gray coloring is what newcomers often call white, but there are no "white" American Quarter Horses. You can click on the photos to enlarge them.

Foundation Quarter Horses - The Foundation Bred quarter horse is a part of our Western Heritage, which can only be maintained by the careful selection and breeding of the legendary bloodlines, such as King, Joe Hancock, Driftwood, Joe Reed II, Oklahoma Star, Wimpy, Skipper W, Old Sorrel, and others. It is the purpose of this site, to bring together folks from all parts of the country, and all walks of life, who admire these old bloodlines, and want to preserve them, through breeding, showing, competing, and just plain riding.

History of the American Quarter Horse - Just what is an American Quarter Horse? the American Quarter Horse is the first breed of horse native to what is now the United States. A melding of various breeds brought to the English colonies in the 1600s, the Quarter Horse evolved to fill the colonists' passion for short-distance racing. One-on-one match races were run down village streets, country lanes or level pastures. Info provided by the the International Museum of the Horse. [archived version]
