*Webmaster's note*: About 3 times a year I receive an email from either an instructor or a student who is working on toward a horsemanship award. The question is: a "Explain the characteristics of each of the 3 distinct American riding styles". I'm sure the first two come to mind very quickly -- English and Western! The third one is Saddle Seat. Although many people think of it simply as another variety of English style, it does have its differences. Riding styles themselves are differentiated not only by the gaits of the horses, but by their tack and form of the rider. The saddleseat style is used specifically with the American breeds of American Saddlebreds, Morgans, and Arabians. Saddle seat saddles have a cutback pommel to make room for the horses withers and are placed further back on the horse. Riders also carry their hands much higher than other "English-style" of riding equitation, to encourage the high head set desired in the saddle seat ring.

To learn more about the Saddle Seat Style, see this site.
